Bath Bombs that are claimed to be “natural” and “non-toxic” often contain controversial ingredients, (detergents, artificial dyes, synthetic fragrance, etc.), that are harsh, potentially toxic and serve no purpose to your health. Micas, (beautifully colored and shimmery), are “naturally occurring” from the earth however, they are coated with other naturally occurring minerals like iron oxide, (which can have negative effects when breathed in), lead and mercury. Polysorbate 80 is a synthetic surfactant and emulsifier (added to stop colorants from sticking to you and to help emulsify the carrier oils). Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a foaming agent, emulsifier and degreaser. It increases adsorption of ingredients by increasing skin permeability 100 times! It can increase hair loss, skin and scalp irritation and damage. UTIs and yeast infections (due to the disruption of your pH), have been associated with bath bombs containing these such ingredients, not to mention contact dermatitis and rashes. All of these ingredients are known skin irritants and may actually dry out your skin! Side note... none of these ingredients are necessary!! Naturally occurring salts and clays with nourishing butters and oils and plant powders that are not coated with anything, will actually leave skin luminous and hydrated.
